Saving YouTube Videos with the Extension

How to save YouTube videos and their transcripts using the BrainTube Chrome Extension.

The Chrome Extension makes saving YouTube videos effortless.

How to Save a Video

  1. Navigate to any YouTube video
  2. Click the BrainTube extension icon in your toolbar
  3. Click "Save to BrainTube"
  4. Wait for the confirmation — the video is now in your Library

What Gets Saved

When you save a YouTube video, BrainTube extracts:

  • Full transcript — The complete spoken text with timestamps
  • Video metadata — Title, channel, duration, publish date, thumbnail
  • Chapters — If the video has chapters, they're preserved
  • AI Summary — An automatic summary of the key points
  • Key Entities — People, tools, concepts mentioned in the video
  • Topic Tags — Auto-generated tags for categorization

Transcript Sources

BrainTube tries multiple transcript sources in order:

  1. YouTube's official captions — Most accurate
  2. Auto-generated captions — Available for most videos
  3. AI transcription — Fallback for videos without captions

Tips

  • Videos without any transcript can still be saved, but with limited searchability
  • Long videos (2+ hours) are fully supported — BrainTube chunks them intelligently
  • Playlists — You can import entire YouTube playlists as Courses
  • Private/unlisted videos — Can be saved if you have access to them in your browser

Troubleshooting

  • "Transcript not available" — Some videos disable captions. The item will still be saved with metadata.
  • Extension not detecting YouTube — Make sure you're on a youtube.com/watch page, not an embed.
