Does Gemini Have Memory Like ChatGPT? What It Remembers in 2026

Yes. Gemini has a memory, and since 2026 it works a lot like ChatGPT's in one respect: it learns from your past chats without being asked. Where the two differ is in what you can see, what you can control, and what you can take with you. Everything below comes from Google's and OpenAI's own help pages, read on 4 October 2026.

• Does Gemini remember past chats? Yes, when Memory is turned on. Gemini can draw on your earlier conversations to personalise new answers.
• Is it like ChatGPT's memory? Partly. Both learn from your chats automatically. ChatGPT also keeps a memory summary you can read and edit; Gemini has no list of memories to open.
• Can you move your ChatGPT memory to Gemini? Yes, outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. Gemini documents an import flow for memories and full chat history.
• Can you take Gemini's memory with you? Google documents no export of memory.

How Gemini's memory works

Gemini's memory of past chats lives under Settings & help › Personal Intelligence. According to Google's help page, it needs:

• a personal Google Account (not a work, school or supervised account),
• an adult account holder, and
• the Keep Activity setting turned on.

It works in the Gemini app, on the web, in Gemini in Chrome and on a smartwatch, but not inside Gems or Live conversations. Google also says personalisation features are not yet available to everyone.

There is no memory list

This is the biggest practical difference from ChatGPT. Gemini does not show you a list of what it remembers. To correct something, you tell Gemini in the conversation. To make it forget something, you delete the chats that contain it from Gemini Apps Activity; Google notes a short delay before the deletion takes effect. If the information arrived through a connected Google app, you also need to disconnect that app, or Gemini can find it again.

Saved info is a separate feature: standing instructions you ask Gemini to keep, managed at gemini.google.com/saved-info. It is not the same as memory of past chats.

How ChatGPT's memory compares

OpenAI's current help article describes improved memory that draws on your past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files in your Library and connected apps such as Gmail, depending on your plan and region. It keeps a continually updated memory summary that you can read, correct, or delete under Settings › Personalization › Memory. OpenAI calls that summary a high-level view: it doesn't necessarily include every detail Memory can reference.

ChatGPT's Temporary Chats never create or update memory, and before you start one you can choose Unpersonalized to keep existing memory out too. OpenAI documents no way to export memory.

Moving from ChatGPT to Gemini

Gemini documents an Import memory to Gemini option under Settings & help. It covers two things:

1. Memories: Gemini gives you a prompt to paste into your current assistant; you copy what it writes back into Gemini.
2. Chat history: you upload the .zip from your ChatGPT data export, up to 5 GB per file and up to 5 files a day. Google says processing can take up to a day.

Import requires an adult account and is not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Google announced it in March 2026.

Which has the better memory?

• For seeing and controlling what's remembered: ChatGPT, because you can read and edit a summary. Gemini gives you no list.
• For switching in: Gemini, if you're outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, because it imports both memories and full chat history.

If you use more than one assistant

Every built-in memory has the same limit: it is readable only inside the product that made it. Gemini can't read ChatGPT's memory, and neither can read Claude's, except by copying and pasting.

If what you want remembered is your own knowledge (the videos, articles and documents you rely on), the alternative is to keep it outside every assistant, in a store they can all reach.
