Does ChatGPT Remember Your Conversations? How Memory Works (2026)

Yes, when memory is on. How ChatGPT's memory summary works, how to see, edit and turn it off, why it says memory is full, and what Temporary Chat does.

Yes, ChatGPT can remember your conversations, if memory is on. It no longer works as a list of saved facts: it builds an updated summary from your past chats and other sources, and that summary is what you see and edit. Everything below comes from OpenAI's help pages and release notes, read on 4 October 2026.

The short answer

  • Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations? Yes, when memory is on. It draws on your past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files in your Library and connected apps such as Gmail. Which of these apply depends on your plan and region.
  • Does it remember everything? No. OpenAI says the memory summary is a high-level view that may leave out details.
  • Can you see what it remembers? Yes: Settings › Personalization › Memory shows the memory summary, and you can edit it.
  • Can you turn it off? Yes, with "Delete and turn off memory". Your past chats stay.
  • Can you export it? OpenAI documents no memory export.

How ChatGPT's memory works now

OpenAI calls the current system improved memory. It can draw on:

  • your past chats,
  • saved memories (facts you asked it to keep),
  • custom instructions,
  • files in your Library,
  • content from connected apps, such as Gmail.

From these, ChatGPT keeps a continually updated memory summary. OpenAI describes it as a high-level view of information ChatGPT may use. It is not a full list of everything memory can reference, and it may omit details that are less relevant or that come from sources not shown individually.

When personal context shapes an answer, a Sources list may appear under the response, and you can mark something as Don't mention this again.

OpenAI also notes that memory features and controls vary by plan, region, platform and workspace settings. Improved memory is off by default in ChatGPT for Healthcare and in Enterprise Regulated Workspaces.

How to see and edit what ChatGPT remembers

  1. Open Settings › Personalization › Memory.
  2. Read the memory summary.
  3. To correct it, type the correction into the text field, or highlight a passage and give the correction.

To check what it has retained, OpenAI suggests simply asking ChatGPT what it remembers about you.

Saved memories, the older list of discrete facts, is now labelled legacy. You can switch back to it from the same screen by selecting Saved memories.

How to turn off ChatGPT memory

  • Turn it all off: in the memory settings, choose Delete and turn off memory. This does not delete your past chats.
  • Stop it using chat history: turn off Reference chat history. OpenAI says chat-history memory is then scheduled for deletion within 30 days.
  • One conversation only: start a Temporary Chat (see below).

Two things to know about deleting:

  • Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a saved memory that came from it. Delete the memory separately.
  • If you delete the memory summary and later turn memory back on, ChatGPT may build new memory from the chats still in your history.

OpenAI also says deleted saved memories may be kept in logs for up to 30 days.

Chats ChatGPT won't remember

Temporary Chats never create or update memory. Before you start one, you choose whether it may use your existing memory. Pick Unpersonalized to keep memory out of that chat entirely.

Why ChatGPT says "Memory is full"

That notice comes from the legacy saved memories list, which has a capacity. OpenAI's FAQ describes no storage limit for what ChatGPT can reference through chat history. OpenAI has also said ChatGPT now manages saved memories automatically to prevent capacity issues (October 2025), and doubled saved-memory capacity for Plus and Pro (June 2026).

If you still see the notice, you're on saved memories: prune the list, or switch to improved memory from Settings › Personalization › Memory.

Projects and other OpenAI products

  • Projects can be set to project-only memory, and since August 2026 you can change that setting on existing projects.
  • Pages and Sign in with ChatGPT don't share your ChatGPT memory (release notes, 29 September 2026).

Can you move your ChatGPT memory elsewhere?

OpenAI documents no export of memory. What you can do is ask ChatGPT to write out what it remembers, then paste that into another assistant's import:

For a full side-by-side of all three, see which AI has the best memory.

If you use more than one assistant

ChatGPT's memory is readable only inside ChatGPT. Claude, Cursor and Gemini can't see it.

If what you want remembered is your own knowledge (the videos, articles and documents you rely on), the alternative is to keep it in one store outside every assistant. BrainTube is ours, so read this as labelled: it keeps what you save in one library that Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can search and save to, and it doesn't replace the profile-style memory described above. Other options are in ChatGPT memory alternatives.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations?

Yes, when memory is on. It can reference your past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files and connected apps, depending on your plan and region.

Does ChatGPT remember everything I tell it?

No. OpenAI says the memory summary is a high-level view that may omit details. Temporary Chats never create memories.

How do I turn off ChatGPT memory?

Open Settings › Personalization › Memory and choose Delete and turn off memory. Your past chats are not deleted. To stop it using chat history only, turn off Reference chat history.

Does deleting a chat delete ChatGPT's memory of it?

Not automatically. A saved memory that came from a chat stays until you delete it, and ChatGPT may build new memory from chats still in your history.

Why does ChatGPT say memory is full?

The notice comes from the legacy saved-memories list. Prune it, or switch to improved memory, which has no documented storage limit for chat history.

Can I export my ChatGPT memory?

OpenAI documents no export. Ask ChatGPT to write out what it remembers and copy it, for example into Claude's or Gemini's memory import.
